Chong Wei Li
Background
Wei Li graduated with an LL.B (Hons) from Queen’s University Belfast and subsequently obtained the Certificate in Legal Practice. She completed her pupillage with Lee & Tengku Azrina in Johor Bahru and was admitted as an Advocate & Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya in 2024. She has since been retained by the firm as a Legal Associate.
Prior to entering the legal profession, Wei Li worked at a consultancy firm focusing on social impact projects, where she assisted in preparing policy recommendations to the Ministry of Finance in connection with the national budget. She was also appointed as a Research and Communications Assistant of the Gender Budget Group, formed as part of the gender budget initiative titled “Engendering the National Budget” by ENGENDER Consultancy and Women’s Aid Organisation. Her interest in research has led her to academic publication — in 2021, her first journal article on international law was published in the CRELDA Journal, a leading peer-reviewed law journal.
Wei Li is fluent in English, Malay, and Chinese.
Experience
Wei Li’s practice focuses on banking and finance transactions, including construction and project financing, real estate financing, corporate loans, trade facilities, and Islamic financing. She advises both financial institutions and corporate borrowers across a wide spectrum of loan and financing transactions. She also has experience in providing foreign legal opinions for international financial institutions.
In addition to her banking and finance work, Wei Li handles corporate and commercial matters, including drafting and reviewing commercial agreements and conducting legal due diligence for corporate exercises. Her real estate experience encompasses tenancy arrangements and sale and purchase transactions involving residential, commercial, and industrial properties, as well as providing legal opinions to Singapore-based developers on Malaysian land law and property development matters.

- Assisted in the preparation of conventional and Islamic financing documentation for domestic transactions in both Ringgit Malaysia and US Dollars for corporate borrowers and customers.
- Acted for a Malaysian financier in relation to banking facilities amounting to approximately RM200 million, comprising fixed-term loans, revolving credit, bank guarantee, and forward exchange contract facilities, granted to a property developer for the construction and development of a condominium project in the heart of Johor Bahru.
- Acted for a Malaysian financier on a Shariah-compliant Tawarruq financing comprising three Commodity Murabahah Revolving Credit-i facilities and an Islamic Foreign Exchange facility totalling approximately RM200 million, to finance the acquisition of industrial land parcels in a technology park, as well as the infrastructure and platform-levelling works in the same location.
- Acted for a Malaysian financier on Shariah-compliant CM Flexi Term Financing-i facilities of approximately RM60 million and an Islamic Foreign Exchange facility of RM20 million, to part-finance construction costs for an industrial development involving an office, factory, and warehouse for a palm oil extraction plant in Johor, including the associated mechanical and electrical works, plant and machinery installation, steel structures, piping systems, and storage tanks.
- Acted for a Malaysian financier in relation to import and export line trade facilities with a combined amount of approximately RM120 million.
- Assisted in providing foreign legal opinions to Indonesian and Korean financial institutions on the validity and enforceability of security, in relation to a Malaysian borrower and a Malaysian corporate guarantor respectively.
- Assisted in legal due diligence exercises on Malaysian subsidiaries of a China-based company and the issuance of a legal opinion related to the semiconductor industry.
